Surrey Primary League Under 15 Senior Cup Final

6th May 2012

Chertsey Town Football Ground

Hampton Youth v AFC Brooklands

This was always going to be a difficult game to call between the teams lying 2nd and 3rd in the league, with just two games to go. Although AFC Brooklands should have been confident after beating the SPL Premier Division Champions in the semi final.

The match started with Hampton having the better of the early exchanges. both teams obviously wanted to play passing football which would created a great final. Brooklands have two early chances but them nerves set in and Hampton took control of the game. Hampton had a string of attacks and set pieces, which centre backs Matt Gratton and Alex Edwards battled and scrabbled clear, but on a couple of occasions Charlie Budd need to make crucial saves. Hampton were attacking down both wings making our wingers Dominic Price and Luke Wayte play much more defensive roles than normal. The Hampton centre midfield pair were controlling the game putting more and more pressure on our defence and making it difficult for us to get out of our half. The introduction of Jake Tudge saw us start to retain more of the ball with blistering pace on both wings allowed to push Hampton back. One break down the left wing saw a cross to Freddie Wilkinson whose shoot hit the post from 20 yards. We ended the half the stronger teams we started to settle into the game.

The half time team talk concentrated on the boys not showing the Hampton team so much respect and to push hard to the first 10 minutes of the half.

We made a more confident start to the second half, which saw the boys get more and more involved in the game. After a couple of chances either way Then on 8 minutes Brooklands took the ball down the right wing the through ball allowed Freddie Wilkinson to clip the ball passed the Hampton keeper. By this point Sam Khera and Brandon Lonslow had started to match the aggression and work rate of the Hampton midfield pair. But with 5 minutes all the hard work went to waste as a misplaced pass allowed Hampton to break with our defence out of position the Hampton striker calmly placed the ball in the net. Hampton had the strong spell while we recovered our composure. Both our fullbacks now started to gain more space to push forward and join our attack creating more options in the Hampton half.

With 10 minutes to go injury forced a major change around push Sam back to centre back, Freddie into midfield and Tudge up front. This started a period where we started to be more dominate than Hampton as we pushed on for the win. The bulk of normal time was now played in the Hampton half during which we came close to winning the game twice but without success the game finished 1-1.

So extra time started and we continued to push on but there was only 1 real chance which the Hampton keeper saved. The second period was still tight with neither team wanting to make a mistake that would cost their team the game. With 1 minute to go Matt Taylor collected the ball took on the centre back wide stopped and timed the perfect cross for the late arriving Freddie only for the ball shoot to rocket over the bar.

So penalties the cruellest way to settle a game.

Out stepped Matt Taylor to take the first penalty and confidently put it away.

Hampton matched this with an equally confident strike.

Charlie (Ramos) Budd blasted his kick over the bar.

The Hampton no.2 stepped forward and Charlie started his Grobbelaar goal line dance and the shot went wide.

Jake Tudge took our 3rd pen and placed and unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Charlie again proved himself to be the best keeper on the day by diving to save Hampton's 3rd pen.

Luke Wayte nervously moved forwarded his kick narrowly squeezed under the keeper.

The crunch spot kick if Charlie could save it the cup was ours the Hampton midfielder hit a weak kick which allowed Charlie to save

AFC Brooklands win the the SPL Senior Cup.

To finish a great day Matt Gratton was named SPL man of the match.
