27/9/09 League - Byfleet Village 3 - 2 AFC Brooklands

AFC Brooklands entered this local derby with two first choice defenders missing and the make shift defence struggled to coup with a physical Byfleet team, early exchanges were even but Byfleet took the lead from a free kick that sailed over Charlie Budd into to top of the net. Brooklands then created three chances from good wing play from Luke Wayte and Daiki Matsuno but last ditch challenges kept Byfleet in front. Byfleet created chances on the break and just before half time scored a second when Budd raced out of his box to intercept another long clearance only for his volley to ricochet to the forward to leave him clear to score.

The second half started much like the first with Brooklands playing expansive football only for Byfleet to score a deflected near post corner. Brooklands then took the game by the scruff of the next and created all the clear chances, their first goal came when Conor McAree-Sullivan broke from full back to cross for Matthew Taylor to fire home. Brooklands then had wave after wave of attacks down the right Taylor drilling in crosses, finally one fell to Matsuno in the six yard box, he calmly scored Brooklands second.   Brooklands suddenly released that they could compete and win the game and after soaking up a couple of Byfleet attacks Brooklands spun forward with neat passes setting Taylor free his cross cleared the defenders into the path of the flying Wayte who was bundled over in the box but no penalty. Brooklands now playing with five forwards just could not get the goal they thoroughly deserved.

20/9/09 League - AFC Brooklands 1 - 2 Burpham

AFC Brooklands took their first steps into the Premiership following promotion and were hard done by to not get at least a point. In a even game Brooklands took the early initiative only thwarted by the Burpham keeper and the woodwork. Beau Robbins and Peter Harding formed a strong middle field partnership shutting the Burpham midfield out of the game.

The first chance came when an early through ball set Matt Taylor behind the static defence but his chip was tipped and caught by the keeper.

Defensively Alex Edwards played well to control Burpham’s tricky left wing that was dangerous throughout the game. Burpham scored when a teasing corner was deflected into the Brooklands net. Brooklands pushed forward and just before half time were rewarded when Tommy Casey volleyed back across goal and into the net a deep cross from Tommy Mason.

The second half continued as the first being and end to end game both side creating chances only for last-ditch clearances keeping the score level. Freddie Wilkinson’s best chance came when he raced clear only to beat the keeper and find his shot clip the post. Brooklands then had the ball in the net when the Burpham’s keeper passed straight to Taylor whose shot when in only to be pulled back for encroachment.

Burpham winner came when a free kick from the edge of the box was cleared off the line only to be poked home on the ensuing scramble. Brooklands still rocking from the goal them conceded a harsh penalty which was struck against the post and cleared on the break Brooklands again managed to beat the keeper only to see the ball creep agonisingly passed the post.

A great effort from the Brooklands players that really deserved a point.

6/9/09 Preseason - Guildford Saints Scorchers Double-Header

AFC Brooklands 5 – 0 Guildford Saints Scorchers

Guildford Saints Scorchers 1 – 5 AFC Brooklands

With the season only one week away it was good to have a double header friendly against an up and coming Guildford Saints team.

Starting with three new players, Brooklands took a little time to settle, the game play was good with players taking time on the ball rather than panicking. Early signs that the team would settle were plan to see with three defence split balls that the Guildford keeper manager to clear. Defensively, Kevin Crosby had an excellent match in his new position as right back, every time he collected the ball he calmly looked for and complete a high percentage of his passes. Freddie Wilkinson making his debut up front quickly built up good partnerships with both the normal AFC strikers managing to score two goals and create two as well. Peter Harding and Beau Robbins playing in centre midfield looked a fine partnership in the first half working well together only getting caught on the break once.

Daiki Matsuno settled better in the second half now playing on the right wing his close control and incisive passes creating three lovely throw balls for goals.  Luke Wayte playing on the left wing continually attacked the Guildford fullback during the second half with great effect. The goals came from Jack Moore 3, Matt Taylor 2, Peter Harding 2, Freddie Wilkinson 2 and Beau Robbins 1.
