On a day
when most games were called off due to the amount of rain the under 11’s
were lucky enough to find the only groundsman in surrey who decided to
let the games play. At the start of the game Brooklands looked like
drowned rats and for most of the game they played like ones.
It was
not long before a well drilled and more physical Oxshott side showed
their pedigree. Fine passing football and a lack of marking from
Brooklands gave Oxshott 2 easy chances and they took them both. With the
half progressing there were a few glimmers of hope when Ryan King
persistently played through balls to Greg Lansdell but the final cross
kept eluding the Brooklands forwards.
The
second half was played very much in the Brooklands half but Oxshott were
not as threatening as they were in the firs. Keeper Charlie Hanlon, who
had suffered more than most due to the conditions, was able to Keep
Brooklands in the game with a couple of fine saves. Just when Brooklands
were trying to get back in the game there was a repeat of the first half
when our ability to mark players was again showed up. Another 2 quick
goals.
By this
time we were praying for both the final whistle and the rain to stop and
both prayers were answered with Brooklands running out second best in
this battle.

“Hat-trick each for Murphy
and King seal the points for Brooklands”
After a
poor performance in their previous outing, the players had a point to
prove this week. Predictably the game had a scrappy start with
Brooklands looking the more nervous of the two teams. The opening goal
came when the keepers kick fell kindly to Ryan King who fired home from
the edge of the area. With Brooklands continuing to push, Max Murray
darted free in the area only to be tripped. Ryan King stepped forward to
banish his penalty demons and make the score 2-0. With the half coming
to a close Mark Murphy broke free to score Brooklands third. Fleet were
not to be outdone and their first meaningful attack forced Charlie
Hanlon, the Brooklands keeper, into an outstanding save.
The
second half went much like the first with Brooklands fourth coming after
clever interplay between Greg Lansell and King saw Lansdell break free
to fire a thunderbolt passed the Fleet keeper.
Lansdell was now finding space on the right hand side of midfield
and his through ball to Murphy secured Brooklands fifth goal. Soon after
a mix up in the Fleet defence allowed Murphy to complete his hat-trick
by poking the ball into an empty net. After the restart Brooklands
allowed themselves to switch off and Fleet secured themselves a
consolation goal. With time running out it was King who followed up from
his own corner to strike home his third and Brooklands seventh.
“Thinking you are going to
win and winning are two different things”
It was a day when looking at
previous results was the players’ downfall.
Farnham entered this game on the back of an 11-0 defeat but it
was obvious that the result was not the story of their season.
Brooklands started well and put pressure on the Farnham defence straight
away when Mark Murphy broke clear to go close. With the game progressing
it was a through-ball from Nathan Middleton-Sewell that put Murphy away
to break the deadlock. Farnham were not going to take this lying down
and before Brooklands could settle they quickly struck two goals in
quick succession making the half time score 1-2.
The
second half saw Brooklands press for the equaliser and it was Middleton-sewell
again with the decisive through-ball this time to Patrick Philpott to
strike home only for the goal to be dissallowed for offside. With
Brooklands continuing to press the equaliser came from a bullet header
by Middleton-Sewell from a Greg Lansdell corner. The Farnham winner came
when confusion n he Brooklands box presented the Farnham striker with a
easy pass into an open net.

Captain leads from the
front
It was
captain Greg Lansdell’s day as an inspirational performance lead AFC
Brooklands to an emphatic victory against Beaulieu.
Brooklands started quickly and within the first 5 minutes they were
ahead when Mark Murphy found Nathan Middleton-Sewell with a pin point
pass which he struck home. Murphy then pounced on a defensive error to
poke home Brooklands second. Beaulieu started to find their feet and
were able to strike back to make the score 2-1. Brooklands were not
shaken by the goal and continued to press for another goal. The action
was taking place in the midfield and Brooklands midfield dynamo Max
Murray was winning all the battles. Booklands third came from
throughball from left back Zac Rottenburg which found Ryan King who
calmly slotted home. The Beaulieu defence was in disarray and Brooklands
fourth came when a Beaulieu defender misplaced a clearance into his own
goal.
The
second half was all Brooklands and all captain Greg Landell’s. His
through ball to Murphy allowed him to find space and slot home for
Brooklands fifth. This was
followed by a stunning 30 yard strike from Lansdell when a Beaulieu
clearance fell kindly to him. Brooklands 7th goal came after
Lansdell ran 60yards with the ball before burying the ball in the back
of the net. There was still time for Jamie Edwards to go narrowly wide
before the game came to an end with Brooklands running out 7-1 winners.

Magic Murphy Stuns Badshot
With both
teams having a similar start to the season it was always going to be a
tricky game for Brooklands. The game started briskly and Brooklands were
the quicker side to settle into their game. With Max Murray pushed up
for this game giving Brooklands more bite in the midfield and it was his
throughball that allowed Greg Lansdell to race clear to open the scoring
for Brooklands. Badshot Lea pushed for an equaliser but the Brooklands
defence were always in control. A defensive error gave Brooklands their
second when Ryan King rifled in from close range.

What
a difference a week makes! This stirring encounter started well for
Brooklands with thrusting midfield runs from Nathan Middleton-Sewell and
Patrick Philpott causing Yateley all sorts of defensive problems.
One of these saw Brooklands take
the lead when Middleton-Sewell broke clear to rifle home from a tight
angle. After the goal Brooklands
failed to settle and defensive errors saw Yateley score 2 goals in quick
succession. With the half coming
to an end it was Mark Murphy’s time to pounce, his maisey run from the
left wing forced the Yateley keeper into a fine save but he only parried
the ball to debutant Patrick Philpott who forced home the equaliser.
The
second half saw Brooklands take control of the game and Keeper Charlie
Hanlon was never troubled. With
Brooklands on the ascendancy a Yateley clearance fell to Aaron Curtis
who calmly lobbed the keeper from 25 yards to put Brooklands into the
lead once more. This time
Brooklands continued to press and another loose Yateley clearance fell
to Jamie Edwards who’s shot ricocheted off the crossbar. With Yateley in
free fall every clearance was now falling to a Brooklands foot and their
confidence was growing. For the
first time this season the Brooklands passing game was being seen and
fine interplay between Murphy and Middleton-Sewell saw him slot home his
second and Brooklands fourth. Soon after Murphy’s direct run from the
half way line saw him break clear only to be pulled down in the penalty
area, the resulting penalty was well saved by the Yateley keeper.
With the final whistle fast
approaching there was still time for Philpott, put through by Murphy, to
secure his second goal of the day.
At the
final whistle Brooklands ran out 5-2 winners
